More and more students are opting to pursue their higher education in countries like Australia, China, UK, USA etc. Many feel that the educational courses or programs available in these countries are better structured and better suited than in their own countries. Some of these places also offer affordable and practical short term loans that a lot of people can avail of. While some feel, this is the best route to get a job in a country where the standard of living is much higher and better than in their own country.

Earlier it was very difficult to go abroad for further education but statistics have proved that more and more students are opting to go abroad. Definitely, it is easier because of the kind of financial assistance available today. You can have one of your relatives staying abroad sponsoring your education. Many banks and other financial institutions provide educational loans to students that can be repaid on getting a job. These loans are available at low rate of interest. You can even avail scholarships to finance your education, some scholarship amounts are so large that they are enough to cover your total costs including tuition fees as well as living.

In countries like USA, certain entrance exams are required to be given, depending on the level of education sought. For .e.g. SAT for undergraduate course or GMAT for business studies or GRE for postgraduate courses other than business. If you secure a good score in these entrance exams, the university grants assistance in form of scholarships to undergraduate students and RA/TA or research assistance or training assistance to postgraduate students. Many students even seek part time or full time jobs during the holidays just to earn extra income.

Going for higher studies abroad is also a very good opportunity for students for personality development. They become more independent, show an increased level of self-confidence, more matured, overall show an academic commitment, intercultural development and also show a marked improvement in expressing their desire.

Improvising On Teaching Methods – Do Not Hesitate To Be Innovative And Creative

Internet and technological advances have help teachers improve teaching methods by going beyond the traditional options. Well, if you are going to assess new teaching options, you might as well think big and be innovative in your approach.

Using group discussions to create a participative atmosphere in the classroom is a very good option. However, why stop there? Why don’t you organize a class visit to a museum or a place of cultural importance? You can encourage the kids to form groups and go through each and every attraction in detail. You can spend an entire day at the museum and then come back to have discussion on all the things that students observe.

You can slyly slip in the important information related to your curriculum in the discussion and ensure that children arrive at these points on their own instead of being spoon fed by you. You can make use of technology to record the group discussions so that students can review it and assimilate the finer and important points whenever they want.

You can also ask students to prepare presentations that will be exchanged with other classes for may even be put up on the college or school intranet site. Not only will this help the children learn more, it will create a sense of pride and enthusiasm that otherwise may not be present in your classroom.

This is just one of the many options that you can explore to improve your teaching methods. Not all methods should provide the same results. However, experimenting will help you strike the right balance between traditional methods and new solutions without any difficulty.

Use Clickers in the Classroom to Spur Student Response

Educational technology integration in the classroom improves outcomes by facilitating more communication. Teachers can integrate technology in their daily lessons to encourage student involvement. For example, a “clicker” is an interactive teaching tool to engage students throughout the lesson. The clicker’s interactivity helps students learn in more creative ways.

The hand-held device records student responses during the question/answer phase of the lesson. Because individual answers are not singled-out, student participation is increased. The clicker response system displays aggregated answers on a common screen at the front of the classroom. This means the class members only view how many or what percentage of correct/incorrect answers were chosen rather than who chose incorrectly or correctly.

Each student is assigned a clicker to use during the classroom session. At the end of the class, students are required to turn the clicker back in to the teacher before leaving the room. This helps to prevent theft or loss of clickers when compared to permanently assigning them to students.

The clicker response system displays individual student answers to the teacher. This information helps the teacher determine the level of understanding each child has before moving on to another concept. Measurements are ideally gauged before a lesson and compared to post-lesson responses. Educational technology integration also helps to accommodate students with communication and anxiety related disabilities.

Lesson plans can be adapted to accommodate these previously unidentified learning styles.  Teachers can track data to determine patterns and effective teaching strategies for each group. The clickers and other classroom technology create a more active learning environment to help hold interest and to stimulate the desire to learn.

A student going for higher studies, away from the comfort of home and country, obviously becomes independent. Studying subjects of varied interests only increases your growth academically, professionally and is a great resume builder. Now days, employers seek to employ people with a strong academic background and international influence.

The education pattern abroad also varies. In countries such as USA, a student can mix and match their electives as per their preference. This allows them to perform well in every semester. Furthermore, education system is not limited to bookish knowledge. It involves a lot of case studies, practical, assignments which are engaging and interesting. It allows students to analyze and research their subject, adding to the knowledge.

Higher education abroad is beneficial to the host and the provider national economically. Host nation gains by providing education and the provider nation gains because most students return to their country. Countries benefit from skill sets of such people, their thinking, and methodology at work and so on.

Effective Teaching Methods

A success of a student depends on an effective teaching technique. There are many methods used to impart education. A single method or a combination of methods can be used depending on the absorbing and grasping power of the student.
One of the training methods used extensively is questioning and testing in which after covering some part of the syllabus, students are subjected to questioning in the classrooms or through tests. This helps the teacher to gauge the understanding level of the students.

Another method is lecturing wherein a syllabus is explained in the classroom and any clarifications, doubts, queries at any point of time is cleared instantly. Lecturing also gives rise to discussions and debates sessions.

Brainstorming is another effective teaching method where the students are given time, to come up with ideas or made to think out of the box. It sparks off a chain of ideas in many students which stimulates healthy discussions. Such sessions lead to creativity and innovativeness in a child. It provides opportunity for everybody to participate.

Other methods are demonstration which could be via visual-audio aids like projectors, computers, cassettes etc. Students can also be shown experiments in a science laboratory which a student can relate to in a much better way. This is also an entertaining way of teaching students.

Case studies, scenarios, activity, role plays are other effective ways of teaching. A student develops analytical and problem solving skills, understands team play in a better manner. Since students’ works in a team, there is scope for developing leadership skills, presentation skills and stimulates discussions. There is also a possibility of arriving at some solutions. It requires involvement of every student present, thus shedding inhibitions of many.

What is a Magnet School?

The American public education system uses public school zones to determine where a child will attend school. Usually the schools that your child will go to is determined by where you live. A different type of school has been established and is classified as a Magnet school. Attendance to this kind of school is not determined by the traditional school zones. Students from any school zone can attend these schools. Magnet schools have specialized programs and classes that make them a more attractive choice for students.

A Magnet school is part of the public school system and is not considered a parochial or private school. Some people think that Magnet and Charter schools are the same. However, Charter schools are not governed by the normal school administration like a Magnet school is.

In the late 1960’s this type of school was designed to help promote racial and academic desegregation. The theory behind it was that if the school offered tempting programs it would lure students to enroll outside of their regular school zones. The purpose was to attract all kinds of students from different areas and ethnic backgrounds.

The appeal of this type of teaching institution is the specialized curriculum provided. They offer innovative teaching methods and advanced programs in performing arts, science and math. One advantage this kind of school has is it receives additional funding from outside sources to be used for programs and supplies. These sources include local contributions, and state and federal grants.

Magnet schools provide students with specialized curriculums that are not offered in the traditional public schools. Recently there has been an increase in the number of Magnet schools being built and the number of students signing up to enroll in them. They are designed to promote diversity through a unique approach to teaching.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Charter Schools

Charter schools are increasing in popularity. New schools are springing up everywhere. Parents are choosing these types of schools over the traditional public schools. Some parents believe that because of the school’s smaller size their children will receive a better education.

Parents who are considering enrolling their child in a Charter school have to look at both the advantages and disadvantages. Below you will find some of the pros and cons associated with this type of school.

Advantages

Charter schools have higher levels of accountability than traditional public schools. They must adhere to rules that are outlined in thier charter contract. If the school fails to meet the guidelines it will be penalized.

Charter schools don’t have to go through all of the bureaucracy that traditional schools do. They have fewer restrictions, which gives them more freedom when it comes to teaching methods and practices.

The academic achievements and performance of students enrolled in Charter schools tend to be higher. Reports and research show that these schools have positive trends when it comes to academic achievements.

Disadvantages

Charter Schools seem to have a higher turn over rate of teachers than traditional public schools. Teachers who work in a charter school usually have more responsibilities, which usually results in longer hours. Over time this takes a toll on some teachers and they quit to return to teaching in traditional public schools.

It is also difficult to find charter school principals or leaders that are equipped to handle the job requirements. Some are less prepared to handle the huge responsibilities of running this type of institution. A lot of them will become overwhelmed and return to positions in traditional public schools.

All learning institutions have their advantages and disadvantages. That is why it is important to look at both sides so an informative decision can be made regarding the education of a child.

Which Teaching Method Does Your Child Like? A Very Important Question

Have you ever tried to identify the teaching method that your child responds to best? Are you of the opinion that analysis of various teaching methods is something that teachers should worry about? Well, every classroom, even the best, will never have just one student.

When a teacher is giving instructions to numerous students at once, there always is a possibility that the one size fits all approach may not work for some. If a majority of the students are comfortable with a professional lecture, then your child to will have to get used to the method irrespective of whether he or she likes it or not. If you do not know which teaching method your child prefers, you obviously will not be the position to help him or her study better.

Contact the teacher and seek his or her advice. Teachers may be required to handle multiple students at once but they certainly are in a position to grasp which student is doing well and which student is not. Brainstorming – Make Sure Students Assimilate The Ideas Developed In The Session

It is important to assess teaching methods at regular intervals. You may have been very comfortable with brainstorming as a teaching method when you were student and may have continued with the same approach in your teaching life. The biggest a problem with brainstorming is that level of progress made is never certain even when each and every person in the class participates in the activity.

You can never be sure whether the student has participated in the session simply because it was a fun alternative to boring lectures or whether the student was really interested in learning. If the student is not focusing on the topic, chances of important points slipping out of mind are always present.

The session works far too rapidly for running notes to be taken. It is advisable to encourage students to prepare reports on the session to summarize the ideas. However, it will be difficult for a single student to sum up all the ideas. Hence, a group brainstorming session followed by a group report writing session makes sense. You can divide the students in different groups and encourage them to come up with a summary of ideas discussed during the brainstorming session.

It is important to make it clear that the groups are not supposed to have another brainstorming session. The original session must be summarized and students should not waste time on further pointless discussions.

You should also conduct tests at frequent intervals to make sure that students are in a position to replicate ideas discussed in the brainstorming session on paper. Lectures and notes are popular despite being boring because it helps students pass exams. Students who are happy with brainstorming sessions may turn against you if they are not getting good grades in exams. Ensure teaching method you choose covers functional as well as practical aspects of education.

Learning from educational videos will not be a difficult task for a teenager who checks out more than a dozen You Tube videos on a daily basis. You may feel uncomfortable when talking to a machine instead of your students when you are preparing the video. Just try to visualize yourself standing in front of your classroom and that should help you get the flow. Do not try to get it right at first. Try to anticipate questions that your students would ask and provide answers as a part of your video. This will help you connect with your students better.

Tell your students that it is perfectly acceptable to be dissatisfied with the experiment. Do not be unnecessary defensive about your attempt to change the teaching method. The students should feel comfortable enough to tell you about the flaws in the video. The last thing you want is for your teaching methods to be criticized by parents simply because students were not brave enough to talk in front of you.
